As part of the current exhibition "The World Knew".
This talk will present the work of Henryk Ross, who secretly recorded the suffering in the Lodz Ghetto during the Holocaust. His poignant photographs invite us all to raise uncomfortable question about the impossible choices with which the German occupiers confronted the Jews of Lodz. They also invite us to look at the afterlife of Ross’s photographs when at times they functioned as sites of mourning and judicial evidence, while at other times they became embroiled in the contested memory of life and death in Poland during the Holocaust.
Thomas Weber is Professor of History and International Affairs. He is the author of Lodz Ghetto Album, which won an Infinity Award of the International Center of Photography as well as a Golden Light Award. His most recent book, Becoming Hitler: The Making of a Nazi will be released on 7 November, and a book launch event as part of the Festival of Social Science will be on Saturday 11th November.
