Colenel Mike Stewart is a native of Aberdeen where he attended Robert Gordon's College, and in 1979, graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School.
Inspired by his early years with the late Mr Norman Mathieson, he trained in General Surgery in Aberdeen, and then at Groote Schuur Hospital in Capetown.
In 1987, he was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps; he went on to train in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Glasgow and London. In 1995, he was appointed Consultant in Trauma Surgery to the Duchess of Kent Military Hospital in Catterick Garrison. Following the closure of the Military Hospitals in the late 1990's, he moved to James Cook University Hospital, South Tees NHS Trust. He retired from the Army in 2014 and continued to work full time in the NHS as a Consultant until 2024.
During his military career, he led field surgical teams on active service in Northern Ireland, Central America, Nepal, the first Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia, and in the two decades of conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan.
From 2000 - 2012, he was Defence Medical Consultant Advisor to the Surgeon General and Programme Director of Training in Traume & Orthopaedics. In 2003, he was appointed Honorary Surgeon to Her Majesty the Queen; in 2010, he was appointed CBE. He has published widely on War Wounds and on surgery of the upper limb.
