Anatomical Society

Undergraduate Summer Vacation Research Scholarships: up to 5 bursaries a to encourage undergraduate members by enabling enthusiastic and qualified Undergraduate Students to apply for a bursary to undertake research in the Anatomical Sciences (including Anatomy Education) for a 4 to 10 week period in the summer vacation normally at their own institution.

The Biochemical Society

Deadline Early February

Applications must be made on behalf of and in association with a named student. Applicants (supervisors) must be members of the Biochemical Society working in a university or research institute. The student applicant would ideally be an undergraduate studying a degree course in biochemistry or a related molecular life science subject. Students will take up the award during the summer vacation before their final year.

The British Mycological Society

Deadline last day in April each year

The awards will provide support for the student at a rate of £200 per week normally for a period of between 4 and 10 weeks in the summer vacation prior to their final year of study. Overheads will not be paid but a sum of up to £250 is available to the host institution as a contribution to consumable costs of the research if funds are not available from other sources and the expenditure can be validated.

British Pharmacological Society Vacation Studentships

Deadline end of March

Funding of £150 a week, to cover living costs, is on offer for up to eight weeks. Vacation Studentships cover maintenance costs and do not cover consumables or research expenses. Students should have completed at least two years' full-time study in a higher education institute (or equivalent), of a degree that incorporates an element of physiology.

Supervisors should be Ordinary Members of The Society and can apply to supervise one student per year. Each institution can submit a maximum of four applications.

British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) Summer Placement Scheme

Deadline Early March

Scholarships are available for between 6 and 8 weeks and carry a stipend of £200 per week. The scheme aims to provide practical work experience in an environment that will match the student's area of study or interests.

Research institutes and universities that are paid-up members of the Animal Sector Group of the Biosciences KTN can apply to host a Vacation Scholarship.

The project must be in the field of animal biosciences. The host institution will receive a grant of £2,500 (including any VAT) to cover student salary (approx. £1600) and project costs (approx. £900). Organisations allocated an award will be responsible for recruiting the student including any costs of advertising. It is not necessary to have identified a student at the time of application, but if a student has indicated an interest, then details of the student may be provided at the time of application.

British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) Vacation Scholarship Grants

Deadline 31 March each year

Vacation Scholarships are designed to give undergraduates experience in research. Each research project should be designed so that it could be completed in the time available (up to 10 weeks) and of relevance to the field of antimicrobial chemotherapy.

Successful candidates will be paid a grant of £180 per week for up to 10 weeks and the Department will be paid a consumables grant of £500. Payment will be made direct to the Secretary/Finance Officer of the Institution who will administer the grant.

A maximum of 3 vacation grants will be awarded each year.

British Society for Cell Biology (BSCB) Summer Studentships

Deadline mid April

Studentships will only be awarded for students who have yet to complete their first degree, usually prior to their final year of studies. Awards comprise a student stipend of £180 per week for up to 8 weeks plus consumable costs of up to £500 to the host laboratory. The award will be made via a supervisor and administered by the host institution.

Applications must be made by the prospective supervisor on behalf of a named student, and must include the student's CV together with a reference from their personal tutor (or equivalent). Undergraduate students are encouraged to develop a project with the help of the supervisor.

British Society for Developmental Biology (BSDB)

Deadline end March

The Gurdon Studentship scheme provides financial support to students in their penultimate year to undertake summer vacation research. We look for students with a strong academic record and clear career vision, who have taken the initiative to establish contacts with a research laboratory where they can perform projects in the area of Developmental Biology. We expect this experience to enrich and complement their portfolio of expertise and to inspire them to pursue a career in research.

Applications are made by the students with the support of their proposed supervisor. Supervisor must be a member of BSDB.

BSPP (British Society of Plant Pathologists) Undergraduate Vacation Bursary Fund

Deadline 1st April each year

The undergraduate vacation bursary is open to all BSPP members and will provide modest support for work on specified research projects during the summer vacation. The objective of the bursaries is to provide undergraduates considering a research career with some practical experience in a plant pathology laboratory and to assist supervisors to meet some specific research objectives.

British Society for Neuroendocrinology (BSN) Undergraduate student laboratory experience grants

Deadline 1st April each year

Undergraduate student laboratory experience grants provide some financial support for a student who undertakes a vacation lab project, open to all BSN members. Funding is awarded at a rate of £130 per week for 8 weeks.

Cancer Research UK Undergraduate Long Vacation Scholarships

These bursaries should be used to encourage exceptional undergraduates to consider a career in cancer research, by providing research experience during the long summer vacation.

The bursary will provide a subsistence allowance for the student in the region of £180 per week. A contribution of £500 will be made towards laboratory expenses. The duration of the project should be 6-10 weeks. Applicants must be long term Cancer Research UK grantees, students should normally be completing the penultimate year of their degree in the summer in which the award is taken up.

Carnegie Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships

Deadline early March each year

Scholarships are open to students in their third and fourth years of study only.

The Scheme is intended for Scottish students undertaking a degree course at a Scottish university, who have shown exceptional merit at university, and who would like to devote some portion of their summer vacation to undertake a programme of independent research of direct benefit to their academic work. All applicants must be in the third year of a four year undergraduate degree programme (or the fourth year of a five year programme) at the time of applying and be of Scottish birth or extraction or have been educated in Scotland at secondary level for at least two years.

The Head of School of the supervisor supporting the student’s application must sign the application form before it is submitted.  The application form must then be submitted online, on the Trust’s website, by the supervising academic. 

The deadline for applications is 5pm on 15 March 2017.

Supervisors must inform Prof Phyo Myint and Dr Allison Carrington if they have submitted an application to the Trust.

The Genetics Society

Deadline 31 March each year

Applications must be made by Principal Investigators at Universities or Research Institutes. The application must be for a named student. Studentships will only be awarded to students who have yet to complete their first degree i.e. those who will still be undergraduates during the long vacation when the studentship is undertaken. There are no restrictions concerning the nationality or membership status of the student, and the student does not have to attend a UK university.

Medical Research Scotland

These offer a 6-8-week period of hands-on research experience during the summer vacation, provide a weekly stipend of £250 and must be held in university or recognised research institution laboratories in Scotland. Applications must be made by intending supervisors and not by students directly.

Pathological Society Undergraduate Bursary

There are 2 deadlines each year 28 February and 10 May

The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland is offering a number of bursaries to undergraduate students of medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry or biomedical science to enable them to work for elective or vacation periods in departments of pathology in universities, medical schools, NHS laboratories or research institutes in the United Kingdom or overseas.

Proposals for work on research projects in any branch of pathology or the acquisition of experience in diagnostic departments are eligible for consideration. The bursary will be up to £150.00 per week, inclusive of expenses, for a maximum of 8 weeks.

The Physiological Society

Deadline 31st January each year

Vacation Studentships offer undergraduates the opportunity to undertake a research project on an area of physiology over their summer break. Working under an academic supervisor, they can get to experience day-to-day life in the laboratory first-hand. Funding of £150 a week, to cover living costs, is on offer for up to eight weeks.

Project supervisors must be Ordinary Members of The Society.

The Rank Prize Funds Nutrition Committee Vacation Studentships

Deadline 12th February 2014

The Rank Prize Funds will again be offering vacation studentships commencing in the Summer of 2014. A total grant of £1800 per student (£225 per week for 8 weeks) will be available for students to assist in research projects in the fields of human nutrition, animal nutrition and crop husbandry. Topics should be within the remit of the Committee. Supervisors already actively engaged on appropriate projects can download the guidelines and application form from the news section on the website.

Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM) Students into Work

Deadline early April

The Society offers FULL members (staff) the opportunity to give undergraduate students studying microbiology as part of their degree programme, or those who have recently graduated, the chance to obtain work experience. Grants can be made available to any full member who is able to offer a suitable work placement for a period of up to 10 weeks any time during the year.

Society for Endocrinology

Deadline early March

A stipend is offered for a period of study of up to ten weeks, together with a sum for the host department consumables. The student will normally be an undergraduate following a course in endocrinology or a related life science subject. Students will normally take up the award during the summer. The applicant’s supervisor must me a member of the society.

Society for General Microbiology

Deadline 1st February each year

The Society offers a limited number of awards to enable undergraduates to work on microbiological research projects during the summer vacation. Applications must be made by the project supervisor on behalf of a named student.

The awards have been named for Professor Harry Smith (1921 - 2011), SGM President 1975-1978, in honour of Harry's well-known support of microbiologists and microbiology students at the start of their careers.

The studentships provide support at a rate of £185 per week for a period of up to 8 weeks. An additional sum of up to £400 for specific research costs may also awarded.

Society for Reproduction and Fertility Vacation Scholarships

Deadline mid March

The objective of these scholarships is to enable particularly promising students to work during the summer vacation in university departments or research institutes on research projects related to reproduction, fertility and lactation in humans and other animals.

Students should normally be in the second /third (if on a four year course) year of their undergraduate degree studies and may be considering research as a career. Ideally, projects should be undertaken in the summer vacation prior to the student entering their final year. Projects can be a maximum of 8 weeks long, and include a stipend funded at the same rate as the Wellcome Trust summer studentships (£180 per week), plus an award of £750 to be paid to the host laboratory to cover the cost of consumables for the project.

UFAW – Universities Federation for Animal Welfare Vacation Scholarship Awards

Applications are welcome from individuals studying at universities or colleges in the British Isles or an overseas institution at which there is a UFAW University Link. Students will usually be undertaking courses in the agricultural, biological, psychological, veterinary or zoological sciences. However, we would also be pleased to receive applications from students from other disciplines who are interested in carrying out a project in animal welfare. MSc students on appropriate courses will also be considered.

Wellcome Trust Biomedical Science Vacation Scholarships

These awards provide promising undergraduates with hands-on experience of research during the summer vacation, with the aim of encouraging them to consider a career in research. Students and supervisors should develop the project and application together. The application should be a project that can be realistically undertaken within a maximum of eight weeks. Scholarship holders in the past have included students of biological sciences (including biology, sports science and pharmacy) and medics, vets, dentists and optometrists.
