University launches new course to inspire budding entrepreneurs

The University of Aberdeen has launched a new course to help students and staff turn their business ideas into reality.

The new course, ‘A Founder’s Journey’, takes budding entrepreneurs through the steps required to kickstart and maintain a strong and resilient business.

The course teaches participants how to turn their ideas into a viable product, conduct market research and develop sustainable business models, while exploring funding, risk management and long-term growth for success.

It is available to all University students and staff and is free to complete.

On completion of the course, students will have produced a full business plan and will be ready to take the next steps into launching their business.

It was developed and launched by ABVentures – the University’s support programme for student and recent graduate entrepreneurs. The creation of the course was led by Senior Lecturer in the Business School, Adam Smith.

He said: “The University of Aberdeen has a strong track record of fostering pioneering entrepreneurs. This course reinforces its commitment to preparing students for successful careers in business, equipping them with the skills and mindset needed to thrive as entrepreneurs or intrapreneurs and make a meaningful impact locally and globally.

“We are delighted to launch this course, that will ensure the University remains at the cutting edge of enterprise and innovation.”

Dr Heather May Morgan, Dean for Enterprise and Innovation, said: “I am so excited that this week, Scotland's National Innovation Week, we are realising our ambition to launch an enterprise course for all new and returning students, to ensure every single one of them, regardless of their discipline or level of study, has an unmistakable entry point into our entrepreneurial curriculum.

“We have been working hard to respond to the recommendations of the Scottish Government’s Entrepreneurial Campus Blueprint over the last two years and it is a testament to colleagues’ commitment that we have been able to achieve this universal offer for September 2025.”
