Rural and island health and care in Scotland: a qualitative study of experiences of accessing and providing care
(Part of the BRUCES research programme)

Do you live in the Orkney Islands?
Do you or a family member have experience of treatment for cancer, musculoskeletal conditions or frailty
If so we’d like to hear from you!

People who live in rural and island areas can receive less or different care from those living in urban areas, resulting in poorer health. To improve care, we need to better understand why rural health outcomes are poorer and identify ways to make it fairer. Our research focuses on examples of common long-term health issues (cancer, musculoskeletal conditions and frailty).
We are interested in speaking to people with these conditions, or people who care for people with them, who live in any of the permanently occupied islands in Orkney (Mainland and connected islands and the outer isles). You can help improve care for people in your area by telling us about what it has been like getting access to diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care and sharing your ideas for how this could be made better.
Taking part would involve being interviewed (in person, by phone or online) for about an hour.
If you’re interested, please contact researcher Avril Nicoll (mobile 07741 900965, email bruces@abdn.ac.uk) to find out more.
