Dr Gayani Dissanayake joins the group as an Honorary Post Doctoral Research Fellow with a background of public health.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I have a diverse background in public health encompassing epidemiology, maternal, child, adolescent and elderly health, communicable and non-communicable disease control, fostering healthy behaviour and community engagement, and public health nutrition. I completed my Doctor of Medicine (MD in Community Medicine / Public Health) at University of Colombo in Sri Lanka in 2024, where I explored prevalence and associated factors for hearing impairment among older adults, and quality of life of hearing-impaired older adults in Colombo, Sri Lanka. My research included a validation study, prevalence study, and comparative study.
Following my MD, I worked as a Senior Registrar at the Family Nutrition and Behaviour Research Unit in the Health Promotion Bureau, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka during 2024-2025. In this role, I conducted, coordinated and reviewed health promotion programmes and projects particularly aimed at improvement of nutritional status and health and wellbeing of pregnant mothers, and children under five. Additionally, I was involved in a social behaviour change communication programmes and behavioural research aimed at empowering the community.
What will you be investigating while you are in Aberdeen?
In Aberdeen, I will be contributing to research on healthcare system resilience in perioperative services and opioid prescription and monitoring. Additionally, I will have the opportunity to explore the primary healthcare and public health systems in Aberdeen.
Why did you choose Aberdeen?
The Epidemiology Group here at University of Aberdeen has a strong reputation, especially within medical sciences, population and public health and its interdisciplinary research. This is an excellent opportunity - it is an honour for me to become a member of this group, and to learn from the most experienced expertise of Epidemiology Group members.
Are you involved in any other research?
Yes, I am contributing to two ongoing research projects at the Family Nutrition and Behaviour Research Unit in the Health Promotion Bureau, Sri Lanka.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling and exploring the environment, including mountains, waterfalls, parks, and beaches. I am also passionate about working out at the gym, listening to songs, and enjoying engaging volunteer work. I love to provide moral support to those who require and request it.
