Tariq joins our group as a PhD student with a background in anaesthesia and critical care, and has a passion for teaching and research.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I graduated from the King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KASU-HS) (part of the Ministry of National Guard for Health Affairs (MNGHA) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) with an undergraduate degree in Anaesthesia Technology after completing one year of hands-on training as an intern in mid-2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After completing my undergraduate studies, I worked at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah as an anaesthesia technology specialist for one year, which was one of the best experiences that I could have had, working with some of the best healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia.
As one of the first graduating classes of KASU-HS in Jeddah, at the end of 2021 I had the opportunity to return as a teaching assistant, where I had the chance to teach and help my students in research, which I found to be one of my true passions.
In the fall of 2023, I started my MSc in Critical Care at Queen Mary University of London, where I gained valuable research knowledge and skills, graduating at the end of 2024.
What will you be investigating while you are in Aberdeen?
In Aberdeen I will be investigating the acute and long-term consequences of delirium after anaesthesia and surgery, under the supervision of Dr Jennifer Summers and Professor Patrice Forget. I am confident that we will accomplish great things with their support and guidance.
Why did you choose Aberdeen?
The University of Aberdeen’s Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) has a strong reputation, especially within medical sciences, and the Epidemiology Group in particular for its interdisciplinary research including contributions to anaesthesia-related innovations such as opioid-free anaesthesia (OFA). This is an excellent opportunity, and an honour for me to become a part of the group and learn from the expertise of the other group members.
Are you involved in any other research?
I am not actively participating in any additional research at this time, but I will be delighted to help and be able to learn wherever I can.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I like to listen to audiobooks while working out at the gym, trying different types of specialised coffee, and (like many young men in my generation) I enjoy playing video games.
