Tell us about your role at HSRU

I have been part of the group for several years. I feel very strongly that as a society we should all be offered the same opportunities and services with no one being advantaged or disadvantaged. Our collective efforts as a group contribute to accomplishing that goal by impacting health research.

Tell us a bit about your background and what you do now

I was a registered general nurse, a state-qualified midwife and a social worker. Worked for the NHS and then Aberdeenshire Council. I was for a number of years an antenatal teacher with the National Childbirth Trust. My last post before retirement was as a location manager in Deeside providing management support for Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership. I also volunteered with the Samaritans for many years.

I retired from paid work almost 4 years ago and now provide childcare for one of my four grandchildren. I volunteer at his primary school. I have 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren who are immensely important to me and who I am extremely proud of. I have 3 miniature dachshunds who are my little sausage family. They are very capable of walking many miles on a daily basis so I walk lots. My wee old sausage now relies on a dog pram but this allows us to still get out and he is so happy to be pushed up and down the hills in and around Stonehaven. As well as walking I enjoy a spin class most days and a yoga class 3 times week. I also go to a weekly sewing class and am trying very hard to improve!

What is your favourite thing about your role in HSRU?

I love being part of the HSRU community. I have learnt so much and feel I am being allowed to contribute to the shape of future research projects and health information being provided to the general public. I have made new connections. I feel valued and accepted by the group.

How do you usually start your day?

I start my day with coffee and then more coffee.

How do you relax?

I love cooking, baking, and spending time with friends.

What was the last thing you shared on your social media profiles?

I do not engage with social media and am not proficient or feel at home with digital technology. I however love engaging on a face-to-face basis with people.
