Space North East

Space North East

Space North East is an outreach initiative established by the Department of Planetary Sciences to promote the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) subjects. As part of this initiative, we are working with local secondary schools to help teach students more about space and planetary sciences.

The Department of Planetary Sciences is part of the School of Geosciences. Our focus is on the study of earth and planetary sciences and the development of instruments for earth and planetary exploration.

Who is it for?

The Space North East is open to any S1-S3 pupils at school in Scotland.

What will the project include?

The project will start in September 2021.

Each project will consist of 4 online classes of around 30-45 minutes each, presented by staff of the Department of Planetary Sciences. In addition, the students will conduct an experiment over 6 months (September 2021-February 2022), recording data measurements using equipment provided to their school by the Department of Planetary Sciences. The students will then upload the measurements to a dedicated webpage through which they can monitor the results. Each measurement will take a maximum of 10 minutes and can be recorded on school days. The closing webinar will be 1 hour, summarising everything that has been learned.

Who is it organised by?

Space North East is headed by Prof. Javier Martin-Torres and Prof. Maria-Paz Zorzano, with Dr Miracle Israel Nazarious and Dr Thasshwin Mathanlal as researchers involved in delivering webinars, preparing the online downloadable guides, data platforms, and guiding the experiments and interactions with the students and teachers.
