Tonight we celebrate Scotland's music. Audiences will be treated to an exciting set of Romanian Gypsy music by Taraful Din Glasgow, followed by fabulous and talented Orkney duo Saltfishforty.
Tonight we celebrate Scotland’s music. Audiences will be treated to an exciting set of Romanian Gypsy music by Taraful Din Glasgow. Hailing from Bihor County, Romania, but settled in Scotland, the group perform traditional and modern Gypsy music from their home region, taking the audience on a journey into the heart of a village party in Transylvania.
From Bihor County we turn to the Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland to hear from Saltfishforty. Douglas Montgomery (fiddle/viola) and Brian Cromarty (songs/guitar/mandola) expertly combine the rich traditional music of Orkney with original compositions, taking in the old and new, as well as influences from Americana to East European folk, tinged, as they say, with a high-octane whiff of heavy metal. They have delighted audiences at many of the world’s top folk festivals including Celtic Connections, Cambridge, HebCelt, Shetland, Lorient in Brittany and Canada’s Celtic Colours, as well as touring to the US and throughout Europe.
The concert will be hosted by former Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year, Laura Harrington. Now settled in the North-East, Laura has performed and taught all over the world and boasts a wealth of knowledge about Scottish fiddle music.
