Oil and Gas in Transition Theme

Launched in May 2021, the University of Aberdeen Centre for Energy Transition is a dynamic interdisciplinary research centre bringing together experts working on delivering low-carbon transition in the energy sector. One of the main themes in the Centre’s research is ‘Oil and Gas in Transition’. The Oil and Gas in Transition theme is tackling the challenge of responsible and just transition in the context of low-carbon exploration and production, energy security, evaluating industry performance against net-zero targets in the UK, especially in Scotland. University champions for the theme are Prof Adrian Hartley (Geology), Dr Daria Shapovalova (Law), and Dr Nikolaos Vlassis (Economics).

Aims

This workshop is aiming to showcase the University’s work on reducing emissions from exploration and production activities, assisting with social changes of just transition, and exploring opportunities to push forward new technologies. Supported by the University’s Centre for Energy Law and the Just Transitions Lab, this event seeks to bring together stakeholders from academia, industry, policy, and third sector for an open dialogue on delivering a just transition to net-zero in the North East. The workshop further seeks to promote the implementation of the Aberdeen 2040 strategy through the facilitation of an inclusive dialogue to identify and discuss interdisciplinary challenges of the Net Zero transition.
