Biography

Dr Audrey Paterson joined the University of Aberdeen Business School in January 2019. Audrey currently holds the positions of Reader in Accountancy and School Director of Postgraduate Research. She is also a visiting Professor at the University of Insurbia, Italy. Prior to this Audrey held the position of Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University (2002-2019). Audrey also held a research post at the University of Edinburgh (2000-2002).

Audrey has a PhD (completed part time in April 2011), Masters in Social Science Research and a Bachelor’s with Honours in Business all from the University of Edinburgh and a Postgraduate Teaching qualification from Heriot-Watt University.

Audrey is currently involved in several research networks which include the Institute of Public Sector Accounting Research (IPSAR), and the Academy for Accounting Historians. She is also the founder of the Accounting for Society and the Environment (ASE) and the Healthcare Accounting and Management (HAM) research networks.

ASE meets annually in the form a one-day conference that attracts international participants. ASE has received regular funding and support from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). It has further attracted interest and support from two 3* rated ABS rated journals: Critical Perspectives on Accounting and the British Accounting Review in the form of special issues in each journal, for which she was the lead co-editor. The ASE workshops have attracted participants from across the globe including Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Egypt as well as many European countries. ASE encourages debate of the philosophies and traditions which underpin the accounting profession, new policy alternatives and the impact of accountancy on the socio-economic and political environment.

With respect to healthcare research from an accounting and management perspective, Audrey recently established a new research group, Healthcare Accounting and Management (HAM) and secured funding from CIMA to host its inaugural one-day conference on Contemporary Issues in Healthcare which was held in October 2018. The first workshop attracted international participants that investigated healthcare issues in Italy, Denmark, China, Greece, UK, Spain and Poland. While this first conference was broad in its coverage of healthcare issues, it is envisaged that, as the research network develops, the themes will focus in on more specific areas.

In terms of external engagement, Audrey co-organised and hosted a two-day stream on anti-fraud and corruption initiatives in public sector organisations at the International Critical Management Studies conference, which was held in Milton Keynes in June 2019. The steam attracted a good number of international participants. Other external engagements include the organising and hosting a workshop stream on Globalisation, accounting and the war against corruption at The Seventh ISBEE World Congress which will be held in Bilbao, Spain, 15th -18th July 2020 and the 13th EIASM Workshop on the Challenges of Managing the Third Sector, at the University of Aberdeen in June 2021. This is a large European conference that attracts world leading researchers. This will also involve guest editing a special issue in an ABS 3-rated journal. Audrey was also invited to take up the position of visiting Professor at the University of Insurbia, Varese, Italy. This is a great honour and opportunity to work collaboratively with fellow researchers to develop and share knowledge and expertise.
