Aberdeen achieves highest ever ranking in Guardian University Guide

The University of Aberdeen has achieved its highest ever ranking of 13th in the UK in the Guardian University Guide, and its seven-place rise from 20th last year also makes it the biggest climber in the top 20.

This latest league table success follows on from a strong performance in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023, released last week, where the University moved up one place to 19th in the UK.

Unlike other national league tables, the Guardian University Guide focuses exclusively on teaching and student-facing metrics.

The Guardian University Guide 2023 reflects the University’s outstanding results in the National Student Survey (NSS), with the University in the top 5 in the UK for Satisfied with Teaching (4th in UK), and Satisfied with Course (3rd). It is also ranked 9th in the UK for the Average Entry Tariff of its students and equal 1st in the UK for Value Added Score, which looks at the probability of a student being awarded a good honours classification based upon their entry qualifications and assigning a score when they exceed expectations.

In the subject league tables the University is 2nd in the UK for Medicine (for the fourth year in a row) and Accountancy & Finance, 3rd for Chemical Engineering and 4th for International Relations. A further 6 subjects are ranked in the top 10, and a further 10 in the top 20, indicating strong performance across the University’s subject range.

University of Aberdeen Senior Vice-Principal, Professor Karl Leydecker, said: “The University of Aberdeen continues to make impressive progress in the Guardian University Guide, climbing from 20th to 13th – its highest ever position.

“This is a very positive sign for the University, particularly following so closely behind the rise in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 – from 20th to 19th.

“Our standing is now firmly cemented in the top 20 for both which is testament to the hard work of our staff and students.

“Our league table success follows a strong performance in the 2022 National Student Survey where we ranked 4th in the UK for overall student satisfaction, reflecting our absolute commitment to delivering an excellent education and student experience.”
