Anyone using their UK Passport as a form of ID should be aware of the following rules set out by the Home Office.
British Passports that have been out of the control of their rightful owner cannot be returned to the rightful owner should that passport be lodged as Found Property by the Police. It must be returned to the Passport Office where they are cancelled.
Home Office Guidelines must be adhered to by the police.
