"The Christian Ethics of Farmed Animal Welfare - A policy framework for churches and Christian organizations" cover page

The CEFAW report 'The Christian Ethics of Farmed Animal Welfare' was published in November 2020 and launched at an online event with contributions from Research Team members and partner representatives.

A recording of the launch event, and a short animated video introducing the project, will be available via this page shortly.

We also have a limited number of free print copies of the Policy Framework available.

To request one or more copies for your church or organization, please get in touch.

The framework is intended to guide UK churches and other Christian organizations in formulating policy and practice in relation to farmed animal welfare. It was authored by the CEFAW Research Team with input and feedback from the representatives of project Partner Organizations and other groups. It argues that farmed animal welfare should be a Christian concern, proposes a Christian approach to the ethics of farmed animal welfare focussed on the flourishing of farmed animals, evaluates current farming systems in relation to the extent to which they enable the flourishing of chickens, fish, pigs, sheep, and cattle, and sets out conclusions and recommendations for churches and other Christian organizations.

This 7 minute animated video introduces the Policy Framework in an accessible way and may be a good way to introduce church and other groups to the project:

We are working on other supporting materials to help churches and Christian organizations use the Policy Framework in different contexts, including a Powerpoint presentation. If you have ideas for other resources that would help your church or organization make use of the Policy Framework, please let us know.

This video is a recording of the launch event for the Policy Framework in November 2020. It includes an overview of the project, the premiere of the project video, ideas for how the Framework could be used by churches and other organizations, and responses to the Framework from Research Team members and partner representatives Dr Joyce D'Silva (Ambassador Emeritus, Compassion in World Farming) and Revd Dr Mark Betson (National Rural Officer, Church of England).

In 2021 we will be hosting a series of webinars aimed at exploring different elements of the Policy Framework and providing guidance for how it could be used in different contexts. The webinars will take place on the second Wednesday of each month, from January to April. The programme is below. Please sign up for CEFAW project updates to receive invitations to these events.
