Schools Outreach
The Department of Physics is committed to engaging with schools and inspiring the next generation of physicists. Each year, we welcome S5 and S6 pupils from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to one-day outreach events, usually held in September. These visits include short lectures, tours of our undergraduate teaching laboratories, and demonstrations of experiments carried out by our students.
We also regularly host school groups who contact us to arrange visits, giving pupils the opportunity to see our facilities and learn more about physics at university. The aim is to provide a clear and engaging view of what studying physics involves, and to encourage pupils to consider physics as a future degree choice.
We have also hosted an Institute of Physics Girls into Physics event at the University of Aberdeen over the last two years, aimed at S1/S2 pupils and supporting wider participation in physics and related subjects.
If you are interested in having someone from the Department of Physics come to your school, group, or institution to give an outreach presentation, please contact the Outreach Officer Dr Kapil Debnath for more information on what we offer.
Public Events
We believe communicating our work to the public is an essential part of the University's service to the region. We put on events for the public throughout the year.
In recent years these have included open lectures related to physics and astronomy, as well as hands-on telescope evenings, and participation at local events such as the Aberdeen Science Festival.
SQA Advanced Higher Physics Projects
The Department of Physics is delighted to accept students looking to undertake some or all of their SQA Advanced Higher Physics project with us. The department has a large laboratory space with access to a diverse range of experimental apparatus, and we would be happy to support you and your school in achieving your aims for your Physics project.
University Open Days take place at various times throughout the year, particularly during the summer.
The Department of Physics takes part in these events. Usually we have a stand in Elphinstone Hall, where prospective students can meet current staff and students and find out what it's like to study Physics at the University of Aberdeen. We also give talks and do lab tours as part of these events.
