Library of Inspiration

Overview

The Library of Inspiration (LoI) is a research-led initiative exploring how accessible, creative approaches to STEM engagement can widen participation in computing and engineering. The project investigates how learners interact with technology across different environments including schools, libraries and home and examines how factors such as access to devices, connectivity and institutional constraints shape engagement.

At the core of the LoI is a collection of self-contained, take-home kits that enable hands-on exploration of STEM concepts. These kits are developed through a co-design approach, working with pupils, teachers and librarians to ensure they are relevant, usable, and inclusive across diverse contexts. Alongside the development of these resources, the project contributes to research in computing education, demonstrating how informal and community-based learning can support confidence, creativity and participation in STEM.

The project has also produced a replicable model, supported by a practical guide and external website, enabling other institutions and communities to develop their own Libraries of Inspiration.
