Cloudmakers Trio

Under the leadership of the award-winning multi-instrumentalist Jim Hart (a founding member of London’s Loop Collective),Cloudmakers Trio represents the culmination of over a decade of musical growth between three of the finest musicians currently working on the international jazz, improvised and alternative music scenes. Drummer and fellow Loop member Dave Smith is known for his experimental approach as well as a deep knowledge of West African music. Michael Janisch underpins the group with his virtuosic and driving bass playing that has led him to work with some of the world’s most notable visionaries, from co-led bands with Lee Konitz and Greg Osby to performances with Quincy Jones, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Joe Lovano to name a few. Their music defies easy category yet draws influence from a diverse range of traditions, featuring the under-exploited format of the vibraphone trio. http://www.cloudmakerstrio.com The masterclass will focus on the power of listening as a force for positive change and for successful collaboration. It will also focus on the preparation and study needed as musicians in order to be able to improvise and collaborate in this way at a very high level. This session aims to demonstrate that it is necessary to be masters of our instruments but musicians need also to be ready to be flexible and creative about how to use them - skills very relevant in todays world where knowledge must be supported and accompanied with creativity and openness as new technologies continue to rapidly change the landscape of the future.

The masterclass if free and open to all students.

(They play the Blue Lamp on Thursday 18th January along with two additional musicians- Austrian-born guitarist Hannes Riepler and French-based alto saxophonist Antonin Tri Hoang. Student tickets are £5.)
