This talk explores the way ex-Jacobites rapidly transferred their military allegiances to the British state in the decade or so after Culloden.
Among the many ironic dimensions of Jacobitism, few are more striking than the ways in which Jacobite families responded to the final military downfall of 1746. This talk explores the way ex-Jacobites rapidly transferred their military allegiances to the British state in the decade or so after Culloden and how, in a strange twist of fate, they snatched a victory of sorts from defeat through a process of compulsory and voluntary service to Britain's rapidly emerging global empire.
This event is part of a series of fascinating and engaging activities that accompanies the inaugural exhibition at the University’s impressive new Library, Rebels with a Cause: The Jacobites and the Global Imagination.
Rebels with a Cause: The Jacobites and the Global Imagination is the title of the inaugural exhibtion at the new Library at the University of Aberdeen. The exhibition displays treasures from the University’s rare book, archive and museum collections to explore and challenge traditional assumptions about the Jacobites.
