Frances Wilkins, lecturer in ethnomusicology at the Elphinstone Institute, University of Aberdeen, will be giving a curator's talk about the exhibition 'Nimitaau, Let's Dance: Fiddle-Dancing through Scots and Eeyou Cultures', which is currently on show in the Sir Duncan Rice Library Gallery.

Frances Wilkins is a lecturer in ethnomusicology at the Elphinstone Institute, University of Aberdeen. She is also a professional musician. Her interest in the fiddle tunes and dances that travelled across the Atlantic with the fur traders to be adopted into the musical traditions of the indigenous peoples of Canada, initially came out of research into fiddle music amongst seafarers from the Northern Isles.

In this talk, Frances will speak about her first visit to the James Bay region of Quebec, to conduct ethnographic fieldwork and the beginnings of a long-term relationship with many of the families of musicians across Eeyou Istchee and in Moose Factory.

The exhibition 'Nimitaau: Let's Dance' is a first-time collaboration between the University of Aberdeen and the Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute in Ouje-Bougoumou in Canada, enabling a tri-lingual account - in English, Cree and Gaelic - of the tradition of fiddle-dancing from both an Eeyou and Scottish perspective.

Find out more about how this fascinating exhibition came about. There will also be an opportunity to visit the exhibition to see and hear more of the fiddle-dancing.
