Aberdeen University medical students work within HSRU

Over the past 20 weeks, three Aberdeen University medical students have been carrying out research within the Unit.

Aleksandra Staniszewska has been investigating the Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire and its correlations with the clinical outcomes using data from the CLASS trial.  She also carried out some primary research looking at one component of the questionnaire where patients are asked to draw their veins onto manikin legs.  William Milligan used the theoretical domain framework to investigate key determinants of inappropriate emergency department attendance.  Emily Kidd updated a Cochrane systematic review looking at different routes of short-term catheterisation for hospitalised adults.  The students have all submitted their theses and are now writing up their work for publication.

Reflecting on the experience, Aleksandra commented “it was a great experience and I learned a lot about both the process of research and the practicalities of conducting research”.  Emily said: “I have had such an enjoyable year, will be sad to leave!”   William added “I really enjoyed the experience of undertaking qualitative research for my BSc project. Although the project was challenging it has given me an insight into qualitative research and an appreciation for how clinical research is carried out. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in this study for their help.”.
