Oil and gas company BP is offering a scholarship worth £14,500 to a student with an offer to study the MSc in Geophysics at the University of Aberdeen.
Applications for the tuition fee award are open to UK and EU students participating in the one-year course, which starts in September. The deadline for scholarship applications is Thursday, May 16.
Ideally located on the doorstep of the UK’s oil and gas hub, the University’s MSc Geophysics programme offers a broad fundamental theory of geophysics and its applications in a multitude of research and industry settings.
Dr David Cornwell, Director of the Geophysics MSc in the Department of Geology and Petroleum Geology, said the programme was developed to address a recognised need for qualified geophysicists within the hydrocarbon, minerals exploration or associated service industries.
He explained: “The programme is designed to expose students to the theory and practice of modern geophysics, with an emphasis on cutting-edge techniques for understanding the structure, dynamics and composition of the Earth from the near surface to the deep interior.
“The content is broad-based and integrative with a strong focus on the quantitative aspects of geophysical data analysis and interpretation.”
Recent surveys of energy industry professionals has identified concerns over a skills shortage in the sector, with geophysics explicitly named on the UK’s Government’s recent ‘skills shortage’ list.
Dr Cornwell added: “The programme has been running for five years and we have already gained a strong reputation for the quality of our graduates. We provide students with the opportunity to acquire the essential skills for careers in the hydrocarbon and associated industries, and we are extremely grateful that BP has chosen to endorse it with this scholarship.”
In addition to covering tuition fees for the programme, BP will also provide an MSc project and mentoring support to the successful applicant.
