Katrin Prager has won a contract for Scottish Government (RESAS) to investigate the “Provision of Farm Workers in Scottish Agriculture” with Diffley Partnership (lead) and the Fraser of Allander Institute, University of Strathclyde (Start 31 Aug 2021, Finish Aug 2022). This focusses on seasonal migrant workers who are crucial for mostly manual labour associated with picking and packing fruit and veg.
Based on a rapid evidence review and statistical analysis the research will derive an accurate estimate of agricultural seasonal migrant worker population. The research programme engages with employers, employees and industry stakeholders. Interviews and a worker survey will be used identify demographics, country of origin and experiences of seasonal migrant workers. Scottish Government wants to use the findings to improve the situation of workers, particularly following on from the FLEX report that highlighted issues around exploitation and trafficking within the agricultural sector.
