Hopes, realities and societal implications of genomics will be discussed.

With the funding of the Scottish Genomics Partnership project, 1000 Scottish NHS patients will have a full analysis performed of all of their genetic material over the next two years.  The data will contribute to the UK 100,000 genomes project.  In parallel, marketing of direct-to-consumer genetic testing is promoting public awareness of the potential of genetic testing.  The combination of the falling cost of delivering genomic analysis and rapidly improving bio-informatic analytical ability has been forecasted to lead to an affordable revolution in diagnosis and patient care within the next few years.

Zosia Miedzybrodzka graduated with MBChB from University of Aberdeen in 1988. Following early medical training in obstetrics and gynaecology, and completion of a PhD in clinical genetics in Aberdeen, she completed higher specialist training as a clinical geneticist in 1999.  She was appointed to a Personal Clinical Chair at University of Aberdeen in 2013, and practises as a consultant clinical geneticist and service clinical director of NHS Grampian medical genetics services, as well as being co-director of the University Centre for Genome-enabled Biology and Medicine.  She is currently Chair of the Scottish Clinical Genetics Forum and CMO Advisor on Genetics.  Her clinical career has spanned the evolution of testing - from performing the first direct mutation test for cystic fibrosis in Aberdeen to leading Scottish genetics services implementation of full genome testing.
