Public Lecture Series
Author and historian Jim Fiddes tells the story of the granite industry in Aberdeen and the North-East, discussing the industry’s changes from the outbreak of the First World War to the present day. This talk follows on one he gave last year on the early part of the granite industry (1730–1914).
Jim Fiddes went to Aberdeen Grammar School and received an Honours Degree in History from Aberdeen University. He started his career as a librarian, and spent 29 years at The Robert Gordon University, mostly as librarian for the School of Architecture and Construction, and the School of Art. He retired early and spent five seasons as a guide for the National Trust for Scotland at the castle of Craigievar. He lives in Aberdeenshire. In 2019 he published one of key texts on the granite industry in Aberdeen entitled The Granite Men.
