Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz's 'Reading Scotland' programme for the 2023-2024 academic year kicks off with a talk by Dr Anna Fancett, University of Aberdeen, on Walter Scott's presentation of the supernatural.

Explore the wonderous, unhallowed, and spooky side of Walter Scott with storyteller and academic, Anna Fancett.

The session will begin with a re-telling of a supernatural tale from the Scottish oral tradition. Dr Fancett will then share some of the insights from her upcoming book chapter, ‘Scott’s Seers: Predicting the Future in the Works of Walter Scott,’ investigating how Scott’s poetry and fiction rests on a paradoxical position in which the supernatural must be simultaneously accepted and rejected.

In this lively and insightful session, you will be introduced to selected texts by Scott from across genres and throughout his literary career.

There will be time for questions at the end.
