Celebrating 100 Years of the 'Discovery of Insulin' Nobel Prize

Join us to hear from Professor C. Ronald Kahn MD, the Mary K. Iacocca Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief Academic Officer at Joslin Diabetes Centre, who will discuss his celebrated research into the mechanisms of action of insulin, and insulin receptor signalling. His talk is titled, 'The Discovery of Insulin, Its Mechanism of Action and the Nobel Prize'.

The 2023 Andrew Carnegie Lecture is being held in honour of John James Rickard Macleod who shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1923 as a co-discoverer of insulin, along with Frederick Banting, and is directly responsible for saving the lives of millions of people with Type 1 diabetes.

Yet despite his considerable achievements, very few Aberdonians today are aware of the legacy of one of their city’s most remarkable native sons. JJR MacLeod was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School after moving to the city at the age of seven with his family and later Graduated with a degree in Medicine from the University of Aberdeen.

Professor C. Ronald Kahn is a world-recognized expert in diabetes and obesity, and a preeminent investigator in insulin signal transduction and mechanisms of altered signalling in diabetes and metabolic disease.

Professor Kahn MD, has received more than 70 awards and honours, including the Wolf Prize in Medicine, Kober Medal of the AAP and the highest honours of the American Diabetes Association, U.S. and British Endocrine Societies, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

He has been elected to the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Medicine. He has authored more than 700 original publications and 200 reviews and chapters.
