Professor Sir Duncan Rice

20 October 1942 - 3 February 2022

Born in Aberdeen, Professor Sir Duncan Rice was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen from 1996 to 2010.

Sir Duncan had a long association with the University both as a history graduate and as a lecturer at the beginning of his career. His return to his alma mater, following a succesful career at Yale, Hamilton College, NY and New York University, saw him champion the pioneering Sixth Century Fundraising Campaign, the flagship project of which was the state-of-the-art library named in his honour.

During his tenure at Aberdeen, student numbers - including the proportion of international students - grew and the University rose in international league tables. Sir Duncan recognised the importance of partnerships with other global universities, the investment in research, and spearheaded an innovative reform of our curriculum. His commitment to international outlook and excellence on the global stage, together with his enthusiasm for widening access to education and extending the University’s cultural role in the community continue to have a positive impact.

We are honoured to host the celebration of Sir Duncan’s life with his wife Dame Susan Rice, and children James, Sam and Beady. Please join us in remembering and celebrating the life of Professor Sir Duncan Rice on Tuesday 28 February.
