Join photographic historians Dr Brian May (lead guitarist of Queen) and Professor Roger Taylor as they trace Wilson’s career, show key examples of his work using a stunning new 3-D projection system and present their accompanying book, George Washington Wilson: Artist and Photographer, published by the London Stereoscopic Company.

In the nineteenth century some of the pioneers of photography were working in Scotland, and George Washington Wilson, whose innovations in stereoscopic photography created some of the most captivating 3-D images, was at the cutting edge of these new developments.

George Washington Wilson (1823-1893), born in the North East of Scotland, moved to Edinburgh and then London in the 1840s in order to train as a portrait miniaturist. On his return to Aberdeen in the 1850s he established himself as a leading artist and photographer. Aberdeen is now home to several key collections of Wilson’s work.

University of Aberdeen Museums & Special Collections - The University’s collection consists of over 37,000 glass plate negatives and is the largest collection of his work. The collection contains images taken in Britain, as well as Australia, South Africa and the western Mediterranean. All have been digitised and are freely available to view HERE

Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums - Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums cares for a significant collection of material related to George Washington Wilson and his studio, including photographic prints and negatives, manuscripts, watercolour paintings and ephemera. They are working on digitising the George Washington Wilson collection, some are available to view HERE.

Aberdeen City Libraries - The George Washington Wilson Collection held in Aberdeen City Libraries comprises approximately 2700 original prints, glass plate negatives and lantern slides. These cover a diverse range of subjects, people and places including landscapes, not only of Scotland and England, but scenes taken in Australia and South Africa. Highlights include the 6 framed photomontages of leading figures in Aberdeen and his portraiture of Queen Victoria and the Royal Family at Balmoral. They can be viewed HERE
