Imagine a Brazil supporter witnessing their team being beaten by Germany 7-1 at the 2014 World Cup football – how would they feel? Social Identity Theory argues we have such a strong drive to keep feeling good about ourselves, that we may start cheering on the opposing team, or calling it ‘bad luck’. This does not only apply to football, but many other areas in life.
