Many nations have become convinced that teaching is one of the most important school-related factors in student achievement. Teacher preparation and development are key building blocks in developing effective teachers. By association, the preparation and professional development of teacher educators is also of paramount importance.

The International Forum of Teacher Educator Development (InFo-TED) conducted a European-wide survey of teacher educators, with follow-up in-depth interviews to explore the professional learning needs of teacher educators in Higher Education.  This paper examines the Scottish data and the common findings from the European research data.  The findings identifies key professional learning needs and raises questions around the tensions of the roles of teacher educators in Higher Education.
