Biography
Katie is an Advanced Research Fellow in the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She is a Chartered Psychologist, as recognised by the British Psychological Society (CPsychol), and a Member of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland. Katie completed her PhD in 2016 titled 'Promoting and Implementing Self Care: A Mixed Methods Study of Offshore Workers and Remote Healthcare Practitioners'. A mixed methods researcher with experience in focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, Delphi consensus methods, the Think Aloud method and systematic reviews.
Her research interests include medical education particularly around the experiences of underrepresented groups (e.g., widening participation, minority ethnic and disabled doctors and students) and also doctor wellbeing and resilience. She is currently undertaking an evaluation of the Gateway2Medicine programme, documenting experiences of students from widening participation backgrounds and undertaking further research in this area. She has served as an Intervention Development Workstream Lead on a Chief Scientist Office funded project seeking to develop interventions to support doctors' wellbeing and promote resilience during COVID-19 and beyond.
She has previous experience of applying educational, implementation and behaviour change theory to enhance understanding of: self-care behaviour; healthcare in offshore and homeless populations; accessing healthcare; and, healthcare students experiences of placement supervision.
