Mrs Rhona Gibson

Biography

As a Careers Adviser at the University of Aberdeen I support students and graduates to develop the skills, confidence and experiences needed to achieve their career goals. I provide careers information, advice and guidance through individual appointments, workshops and curriculum-based teaching, working with students from a wide range of academic disciplines.

As the lead Careers Adviser for the Schools of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture, and Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, I work closely with academic colleagues to embed employability and career development within the student experience. My teaching focuses on career management, employability, professional skills and teamwork, helping students recognise and articulate the value of their academic and extracurricular experiences.

I lead the University of Aberdeen's Career Mentoring Programme and have extensive experience in designing and delivering initiatives that enhance student employability, support positive graduate outcomes and strengthen engagement with employers and alumni.

Since joining the Careers and Employability Service in 2007, I have contributed to a range of strategic and curriculum-based projects supporting student success. My professional qualifications include a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (University of Warwick/AGCAS), Fellowship of Advance HE, ILM Level 3 Coaching, Accredited Belbin Practitioner status and #IamRemarkable facilitator accreditation.

My teaching focuses on helping students recognise, articulate and develop the skills, experiences and professional confidence needed to succeed beyond university. I work with students at different stages of their academic journey, embedding career development learning and employability within the curriculum.

My teaching includes:

• SM1501: The Cell – introducing career awareness and employability within the Life Sciences curriculum.
• PD2503: Work-based Learning – supporting students undertaking employer-partnered projects and reflecting on workplace learning.
• BT3006: Working Out? Placement and Career Skills – preparing students to secure and maximise placement opportunities through effective career planning, applications and professional development.
• ED3537: Employer-led Interdisciplinary Project – facilitating student engagement with interdisciplinary team projects using the Belbin Team Roles framework.

Alongside my teaching, I offer one-to-one and small-group career development support for undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students, covering career planning, applications, interviews, networking and professional skills development.
