Congratulations to Professor Muhammad Azizul Islam in the Business School who appears in Amnesty International’s report ‘Abandoned by Fashion’ which was released last week.
Part of a wider analysis of fashion workers and the ongoing accountability of fashion brands, the reference appears in a section discussing the limitations of social audits in the garment industry.
Professor Islam’s quote is used to highlight the systemic issues with audit transparency and worker involvement. In it he says: “Auditors are essentially protecting the interests of retailers, and workers don’t share their concerns with auditors. They are scared. When auditors share reports, they only share with managers and not workers, so workers have no idea what is happening.”
