"Social Scientists at Large: Achieving Impact in and outside of Academia"

The Business and Management Pathway of the Scottish Graduate School of Social SciencesDoctoral Training Centre is delighted to announce a second cross-pathway PhD colloquiumon April 9th-10th at the University of Aberdeen.
Building on the success of the previous colloquium, the event will work to furtherstrengthen the Business and Management doctoral community in Scotland. It will providedoctoral researchers with an exciting opportunity to present their work to, and receivefeedback from peers, and academic staff from across the pathway, as well as to networkwith other PhD scholars and academics from across Scotland. The colloquium will featurepaper presentations in parallel sessions and a poster presentation session.
In recognition of a growing emphasis on the societal impact of social research, and theincreasing diversification of post-doctoral careers, the colloquium will include a series ofworkshops on the theme of “Social Scientists at Large: Achieving Impact in and outside ofAcademia”. Workshop sessions will address such topics as developing a publishing strategy;applying for research funding; engaging with media; building a consultancy career.Professor Huw Davies (University of St Andrews) will give a keynote address on the topic ofpolicy impact in social science.The colloquium is open to all PhD students researching Business and Management relatedtopics at Scottish Universities, as well as those from relevant disciplines outside of Businessand Management. The cost of attendance is £65, including meals. Participants will need tomake their own accommodation and travel arrangements. Participants should approachtheir own institutions with regard to covering attendance, travel and accommodation costsfor the colloquium.We invite students to submit a short, 250-word abstract to present a poster or give aconference-style presentation. We welcome submissions in any research area within thebroad field of business and management, including but not limited to the followingspecialisms:
- Human Resource Management and Organisation Studies
- Healthcare
- Marketing
- Ethics/Corporate Social Responsibility
- International Business
- Strategy
- Entrepreneurship
- Operations Management/Management Science
Submissions are welcome from students at any stage of PhD study. The abstracts will be reviewed by academics from within your field of study. As a guide, we would suggest those earlier in their studies (e.g. first year) present posters and those who are more advanced give formal presentations. Space to give formal presentations is limited and we may suggest that some who apply for this route present a poster instead.
Abstracts should be submitted to claremcintyre@abdn.ac.uk by 12 February 2015. Final decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated by 27th February 2015.
Please indicate your field of study and preference for slide or poster presentation at the top of your abstract and in the accompanying email.
