Why did you choose to study at the University of Aberdeen?

I completed both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Iran, and I had always dreamed of continuing my education abroad. I was eager not only to advance academically but also to experience life in a different country, meet people from diverse cultures, and broaden my worldview. Coming from a society where gender and ethnic discrimination often limit women's opportunities in both education and the workplace, I was determined to pursue a path that would empower me.

I connected with Dr John Lamb, a lecturer at the University of Aberdeen whose research aligned closely with my own academic interests. He had read my publications, and after a meaningful conversation and an interview, I felt a strong connection to both his work and the University. At Aberdeen you can tailor your degree to your interests and career goals and there is more support for researchers. The University of Aberdeen is one of the UK's most internationally distinguished universities and a good environment for international students.

You can tailor your degree to your interests and career goals...

What is your PhD topic and why does it interest you?PGR Testimonial Sara Hosseini 2

My PhD research builds on my previous work in operations research and data envelopment analysis (DEA), a field in which I have already published three academic papers after my Master’s degree.

I am particularly interested in the analytical and decision-making aspects of DEA, as it allows for a practical application of mathematical models to real-world problems.

In addition to my core research focus, I also have a strong interest in applied mathematics and enjoy exploring how mathematical theories can be used to solve complex, real-life challenges. This combination of theoretical rigor and practical relevance is what drives my passion for this field and motivates me to pursue advanced research in this area.

Learning from experience is an important part of studying at the University of Aberdeen. Have you undertaken any practical experience during your degree so far?

Yes, the University has offered a wide range of workshops that I have actively participated in. These sessions have greatly enhanced my research and academic skills. As a Graduate Academic Assistant, I am involved in many tasks and this term I have tutored as well.

Thanks to the University's support, I will also be attending the EURO Conference 2025 in Leeds this June, where I will be presenting my first research paper. This will be a valuable opportunity for me to share my work with an international academic audience and gain insightful feedback from experts in the field.

My career outlook has significantly improved. I now have access to world-class academic support, professional development workshops, and international research opportunities.

How do you feel about your career prospects now vs. before you started your degree?

Before starting my PhD, my career prospects felt more limited, especially considering the challenges I faced in my home country.

Since joining the University of Aberdeen, I feel that my career outlook has significantly improved. I now have access to world-class academic support, professional development workshops, and international research opportunities. I hope new possibilities for a future career in research and academia—something I now see as truly achievable.

PGR Testimonial Sara Hosseini 3What training & support have you received during your research?  How has it helped you?

The University offers a variety of workshops and wellbeing events, which have been instrumental in enhancing my research methodologies, writing skills, mental health, and academic presentation abilities. These workshops have provided me with the tools to effectively design and execute my research, improving both the quality and efficiency of my work.

Additionally, the guidance from my first supervisor, Dr John Lamb, has been incredibly beneficial. His mentorship has helped me refine my research focus, develop my critical thinking skills, and navigate the complexities of academic publishing.

How have you found the flexibility of your research alongside other commitments?

Balancing my research with other commitments has been a challenge, but I try to make it manageable. As an international student, I have had to adjust to a new environment, language, culture, and personal responsibilities, including supporting my family back home. Despite these challenges, the University's flexible approach to research timelines and the supportive nature of my supervisor have allowed me to effectively manage both my academic work and personal commitments.
