Saltire Scholarship

Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships is a programme of scholarships offered by the Scottish Government in collaboration with Scottish universities. Our chosen scholars are people who aspire to become influential leaders in their future careers. They have wide ranging interests outside their studies and a desire to broaden their personal and academic experience in Scotland.

Scholarships are available to citizens of the following countries: Canada, China (including Hong Kong), India, Pakistan or USA. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be a citizen of Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan and USA. 
  • Have obtained an offer of a place to study full-time at the University of Aberdeen. On-line and distance learning courses are not eligible for funding
  • Preferably have a place on a one-year postgraduate taught masters
  • Have not previously completed undergraduate studies at a Scottish University

Aberdeen Alumni Discount

20% discount on the full cost of a taught postgraduate programme and one year of a full time research programme (two years for part time). Applies to to all taught postgraduate programmes or first year of a full time research programme.


CB Davidson Fund

The CB Davidson fund provides limited financial support for Postgraduate students within the School of Law.

Commonwealth Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to students from countries of the British Commonwealth. Applications should be made to the Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in the student's own country.


James Carnegie Scholarship

There is one James Carnegie Scholarship available. The scholarship will provide £2,000 per annum towards the students' maintenance costs for the duration of the postgraduate degree course, whether that is a one year Masters, PhD (3 years) or Master by Research leading to a PhD (4 years).

John Reid Trust Scheme 1959

The Trust exists to assist distinguished Aberdeen University graduates, preferably with Honours, and preferably in Arts, which failing, in Science, to continue their studies in Arts or in any other branches of higher learning at any institution outside Scotland.

Postgraduate Research

T.F. Torrance Awards

Thanks to a generous donation from the Very Reverend Dr Iain Torrance, the University of Aberdeen is pleased to offer the T.F. Torrance Scholarships. The scholarships support promising doctoral students studying on a full-time, residential basis at the University of Aberdeen in the fields of Systematic and Historical Theology, Pastoral Theology, Theological Ethics and Biblical Studies.

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds Foundation for Basic Research in Medicine offers studentships to outstanding young scientists who wish to pursue an ambitious PhD project of approximately three years in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council BBSRC - Research Council Awards

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is the UK’s principal funder of basic and strategic biological research.

Carnegie/Caledonian PhD Scholarships

Carnegie/Caledonian Scholarships are prestigious schemes of scholarships designed to support a limited number of graduates with first class honours degrees who will pursue three years of postgraduate research leading to a PhD at a Scottish university. There is no restriction on the subject or field.
