Advanced Entry

All the information you need about Advanced Entry at the University of Aberdeen.

Advanced Entry
What is Advanced Entry?

Most of undergraduate degree programmes in Scotland consist of four years of study. Advanced Entry allows highly qualified applicants to join a degree programme in second year, rather than starting in first year. This means you can complete an Honours degree in three years instead of four.

Advanced Entry is a great option for students who have already demonstrated strong academic achievement and are ready to progress more quickly through their studies.

Who Can Apply for Advanced Entry?

Advanced Entry is designed for high-achieving students who are academically prepared to enter directly into second year. You may be considered for Advanced Entry if you achieve the necessary grades in qualifications such as:

  • Scottish Advanced Highers
  • A-levels
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
What Degree Programmes Are Available?

Advanced Entry is available for many of our degree programmes in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (MA programmes), Science (BSc, MChem and MSci programmes), and Engineering (BEng programmes only). Advanced Entry is not available for the degrees in Law, Medicine or Primary Education.

What Grades Do I Need for Advanced Entry?

The specific grades required vary by programme. Full details of the qualifications and grades required for advanced entry to second-year.

How to Apply for Advanced Entry

To apply for Advanced Entry through UCAS. When completing your application, select “Point of Entry: Year 2” to indicate that you wish to be considered for Advanced Entry.

If your application for second-year entry is not successful, you will automatically be considered for first-year entry, where appropriate.

Do I still get the same student experience if I join in Second Year?

Students joining through Advanced Entry are fully part of the University community. You’ll still be able to take part in Welcome Week activities, meet other students, join clubs and societies, and access all the same support services as students starting in first year. Advanced Entry students also benefit from our Accommodation Guarantee, which means you can choose to live in university accommodation. This is a great way to settle in, make friends, and experience student life in Aberdeen.

While you’ll be joining a cohort that has already completed first year, Advanced Entry students quickly become part of the class and enjoy the same opportunities, experiences, and sense of community as other undergraduates.
