This year, I had the opportunity to present my first-author research at the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) 2026 Congress in Basel, Switzerland. As a fourth-year medical student at the University of Aberdeen, presenting at an international conference was a memorable experience and an excellent opportunity to engage with clinicians and researchers working at the forefront of hand surgery.
One of the most rewarding aspects was discussing the work with experts in the field. While presenting can be nerve-racking, the questions and conversations afterwards were particularly valuable, offering different perspectives and highlighting areas for future research. It was also encouraging to see genuine interest in the project and its potential clinical implications.
The research itself was a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound measurement techniques for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Nerve conduction studies are currently the reference standard for diagnosis but have recognised limitations, including patient discomfort and a lack of anatomical information. Our work explored whether ultrasound-based measurements could provide a reliable alternative or complement to existing diagnostic pathways.
Beyond my own presentations, attending both meetings gave me the chance to hear about new developments in hand surgery, from clinical innovations to ongoing research projects. Meeting surgeons and researchers from different institutions reinforced the importance of collaboration and evidence-based practice in improving patient care.
I am very grateful to my supervisors and collaborators for their support throughout the project and for providing me with these opportunities. Presenting at FESSH has strengthened my interest in surgery and research, and I hope to continue building on this work in the future.
