Aberdeen joins Scottish Universities Press

As part of the University of Aberdeen's ongoing commitment to making research open to all, the institution has joined Scottish Universities Press (SUP).

SUP is a new open access book publisher coordinated by the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries (SCURL). It provides researchers with a clear and cost-effective route to make their work freely available to a global audience and has now published three titles.

The University’s support for SUP complements investment in Aberdeen University Press, the institutional open access publishing book and journal publisher.

Open research is a core component of positive, inclusive research cultures, and is part of an institutional Research Cultures Strategy, ensuring that the University works with shared standards of excellence. Providing researchers with opportunities for open access publishing is important to support the research community in adopting and embedding open research practices across all disciplines. Joining SUP and continuing to invest in AUP reflects a belief that openness enhances the integrity and reach of research, strengthens public trust, and reinforces commitment to responsible research practices.

Nick Forsyth, Vice Principal – Research, commented: “I’m delighted that Aberdeen has joined other Scottish universities in support of our shared commitment to open research and building positive research cultures across Scotland. I encourage colleagues to consider both AUP and SUP as publishers able to maximise the reach of their research.”

Hannah Whaley, Chair of the SUP Management Board and University Librarian and Director of Library Academic and Cultural Services at the University of Dundee, said: “SUP has delivered a highly effective collaborative infrastructure for academic publishing. We are excited to be expanding our network to welcome the University of Aberdeen, following the successful launch of our first three titles and the extension of our publishing operations to include textbooks. Collaboration is key to addressing the significant challenges in the publishing landscape and to realising the full benefits of open access publishing, including cost savings for universities and free and equitable access to research.”
