Bringing together Data and AI research from across the University
The University of Aberdeen is now representing the North and North-East of Scotland as part of The Turing University Network, allowing meaningful collaborations across the data science and AI landscape.
"For more than three decades, Aberdeen has carried out research in data science and artificial intelligence — spanning both the fundamental science and its application to real-world problems. We continue to find new ways to put these technologies to work for the public good — developing them responsibly and in ways people can trust.
The benefits of AI are inherently interdisciplinary. Our aim is to bring AI techniques to bear on the problems that matter across other disciplines, uniting fundamental technology with applied expertise so that colleagues throughout the University can put data science and AI to work in their own fields.
We have already built real depth — in trustworthy and responsible AI, in AI for health, and in AI for agri-food, the latter anchored by our £10.6 million SUSTAIN Centre for Doctoral Training. Building on this, and on Aberdeen's distinctive geographical and regional strengths, we are developing the specialisms that will define what we are known for internationally. That focus is already delivering: major national funding, deep partnerships with industry and the public sector, and discoveries that change practice.
AI is a field in its own right, but it also runs through every other interdisciplinary challenge — health, environment, energy and social inclusion. We will pursue our own distinctive research while working in close partnership across the wider Institute, strengthening one another's work as much as our own. Through our membership of the Turing University Network, our commitment to the region's digital economy, and our investment in research-informed teaching, we will maintain and enhance Aberdeen's world-leading profile."
