Shaping Chemistry since 1793

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1793 and is an outward looking, vibrant and diverse department with a strong international collaborative profile.

We are proud to have been ranked first in Scotland for research impact in REF2021, driving exciting breakthroughs in new medicines, energy, functional materials, catalysis, biomaterials, and the environment. 95% of our research is rated as world leading or internationally excellent.

We have excellent research facilities and engage and work with multiple partners (academic and industry) to enhance the impact of our research. Our research environment was judged to be 100% world leading or internationally excellent in REF2021.
