Join us to hear from spoken-word artist Noon Salah Eldin and ceramicist Helen Love about their works of art responding to the history of Old Aberdeen's Powis Gateway, a structure built using wealth generated from slavery.

In 2020 Sudanese Aberdonian spoken-word artist Noon Salah Eldin and Aberdonian ceramicist and glass artist Helen Love were awarded a commission by Aberdeen Art Gallery to create a collaborative artistic response to Powis Gateway in Old Aberdeen. Part of the University of Aberdeen's campus, the gateway was built using wealth generated from slavery by the owners of Powis House in the 1800s, the Leslie family.

As part of this Powis Gateway Project, Noon wrote, performed and recorded her poem, 'The Violence of Identity', and a ceramic plaque was created by Helen containing an imagined depiction of an enslaved woman named Quasheba.

Noon and Helen will be joining us to discuss this project, how and why they were inspired to create their artworks, and their creative practice more widely.

Participation: Join in with the conversation as much or as little as you like - keep your camera and mic off and just listen, or switch them on and ask a question. You can also use the chat function to ask questions if you prefer.
