Philosophy

Aberdeen Philosophy is a vibrant research and teaching department. Our welcoming community of scholars are international experts in a diverse range of philosophical sub-disciplines, from the ethics of AI to the philosophy of time.

Philosophy has a rich history at the University of Aberdeen. The discipline has been taught here since King’s College was founded in 1495. Aberdeen Philosophers also played a central role in the Scottish Enlightenment. For instance:

• Thomas Reid, leading member of the Scottish School of Common Sense, graduated from Aberdeen in 1726 and served as Professor from 1752.
• Alexander Bain, whose work in the philosophy of mind helped to lay the foundations for modern scientific psychology, graduated from Aberdeen in 1840 and was appointed Regius Chair of Logic in 1860.
