The University of Aberdeen is delighted to be able to offer a year’s free accommodation new undergraduate students from a SIMD20 (Quintile 1) home postcode*. This offer applies to students starting at the University in September 2021.

*Please note that eligibility criteria apply in order to receive this offer.

Free accommodation places will be available in University owned Halls of Residence. Most of our accommodation is based within Hillhead Student Village, located near the Old Aberdeen campus.

SIMD stands for Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. One of the metrics used by the University for contextualised admissions and widening access is if an applicant normally resides in an SIMD 20 (also commonly referred to as SIMD Quintile 1) postcode area. Postcodes in these areas are considered by the Scottish Government to be among the most deprived in Scotland.

You can check if your home postcode is in a SIMD 20 (Quintile 1) postcode area on the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2020 postcode lookup file.

To check a postcode please download and open the Postcode to SIMD rank (5.5MB) Excel file, then type the postcode into the column called Enter Your Postcode Below. Eligible postcodes will appear as ‘1’ in the column titled ‘SIMD 2020v2 Quintile’.

If you have any difficulties in determining if your postcode is in a SIMD 20 (Quintile 1) area please contact the University’s Widening Access team.
