The National Schools Programme logo

The Reach Programme hosted at the University of Aberdeen provides information, advice and guidance on applying for professional degrees. We offer support in the following areas:

The project supports S4-6 pupils to make informed choices about university study. We work with pupils in state schools across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highlands, Orkney and Shetland. Reach Aberdeen is part of a national widening access project funded by the Scottish Funding Council.

What support is available through Reach?

We offer a range of career insight days, application support sessions, mentoring opportunities, and individual guidance. We can also provide general advice about applying and studying at University. Events are normally held in Aberdeen and Inverness. Students can also benefit from travel cost payments and accommodation to help them participate.

Am I eligible?

To take part in Reach you must attend a state school and meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Resident in a SIMD20 (Quintile 1) or SIMD40 (Quintile 2) postcode area according to the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. You can check your postcode using our SIMD Postcode Checker here.
  • You are care experienced
  • You are a young carer - i.e. you look after a relative with a disability, illness, or addiction
  • You are estranged - i.e. living without a family support network
  • Eligible for free school meals
  • Eligible for EMA
  • You are a refugee or asylum seeker
  • Resident in an area considered to be Remote & Rural (4-8 on the 8 fold Urban Rural Classification). You can check your classification on the Scottish Government website.

To take part in the programme, you must firstly apply to register with Reach. If you are unsure if you are eligible please email us at reach@abdn.ac.uk. The eligibility criteria is set at a national level with the Scottish Funding Council who fund the Reach Programme.

How to register?

To register with Reach please complete the Reach application form. Your application will then be assessed by the team to ensure you are eligible to take part.

Interested in other degrees?

If you are interested in another programme of study, such as Dentistry or Veterinary Medicine, we may still be able to support you through our partner universities. Please contact us at reach@abdn.ac.uk for more information.

National Schools Programme

Reach Aberdeen is part of the National Schools Programme, funded by the Scottish Funding Council. The NSP aims to support Senior Phase pupils from backgrounds of socioeconomic disadvantage and from underrepresented groups to access higher education in university.

Opportunities in Law

We work in partnership with the School of Law, local businesses and Law students to offer a range of opportunities and experiences:

  • Information on entry requirements and subject choice
  • Assistance in sourcing work experience
  • Career exploration days and events
  • Student mentoring opportunities

We follow a blended model, meaning we run both online and in person events.

We work closely with the Medical Admissions team, current students and partners to offer a range of opportunities and experiences relating to Medicine:

We follow a blended model, meaning events take place online or in person.

If you are considering studying Law or Medicine, we have compiled information on resources available to you. All resources are free to use, some are open access and others will require you to register.

Law Resources
  • Pinsent Masons Online Work Experience Programme

  • Linklaters virtual experience programme (this may be more focused on English law but a good opportunity to learn more about a global commercial firm).

  • Future Learn have some good free law courses that helps you connect with some of the top educators in the world. Most of the courses are focused on English Law and are for those with previous knowledge, however "The Modern Judiciary: Who They Are, What They Do and Why it Matters" is aimed at your age group. Please note that it is English law, however it may still be of interest and particularly for anyone who is considering the joint Eng./Scots law degree.

  • The Law Society of Scotland is the regulatory body for all solicitors in Scotland. Their website has vast information on studying the LLB and qualifying as a solicitor.

  • The law is being challenged in ways that it never has before due to the current situation. You can find out more about how it is impacting Scots law on the Scottish Legal News website.

Veterinary Medicine Resources
  • The Veterinary Schools Council is the representative body for the United Kingdom’s 11 veterinary schools, as well as two non-UK associate members in Ireland and the Netherlands. Their website has information for prospective applicants on applications, work experience and interviews.

Scholarships and Funding

For students considering studying at the University of Aberdeen, we offer a number of scholarships and bursary opportunities.

To be considered you need to have applied for, and accepted your offer of study. Applications usually close in May each year.
