Biography

I am a second year PhD student interested in structural geology, the energy transition and creativity in research.

My research project is titled "Thrust localisation and linkage through rheological multilayers" and involves examining how faults form in mountain belts when hard rocks are encased by soft rocks. I am funded by the GeoNetZero CDT based at Herriot Watt. This research is important for finding escape pathways in long term geological storage solutions such as nuclear waste disposal and carbon capture and storage (CCS). This involves a lot of fieldwork and looking at outcrops on different scales. I love how much I can use my artistic skillset in my research, through making and interpreting 3D models to analysing seismic and microstructures in core data. I am part of the Fold-Thrust Research Group here at Aberdeen.

I previously attended Durham University where I completed my BSc in 2019 and my MScR in 2020 - "Tectonic Evolution of the Prøven Igneous Complex within the Rinkian Fold-Thrust Belt, West Greenland: Investigation using 3D Photogrammetry" in conjuction with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS).

Outside of my research I am passionate about Scottish geology and landscape, especially the geology of the Moine Thrust and the Assynt Geopark. I am a qualified Summer Mountain Leader and a Winter Mountain Leader Trainee.
