Singing for Young Singers

Singing for Young Singers

During the day, participants will be introduced to songs from the Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection, which is housed in Historic Collections at the University of Aberdeen. This is an extraordinarily rich resource of North-East material, arguably the largest of its kind in Europe. It was collected by Gavin Greig and the Rev. James B Duncan in the first two decades of the twentieth century. The publication of the collection is now nearing completion with Volume 8 due out in December from Mercat Press.

The day will consist of two workshops - morning and afternoon. At the first, Gordeanna McCulloch and Anne Neilson will introduce a number of excellent examples from the Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection in an interactive and participatory session. The afternoon workshop will allow singers the opportunity to work on material from the morning session, either individually or in groups, and interpret the songs in their own style, with support from Gordeanna and Anne.

The evening will feature a performance by all the participants at the Lemon Tree at 8:00 pm of material from their own repertoire or from songs learned during the day.

The funding for the day has been made possible by the Arthur Watson Arts Residency in the city, 'Singing for Dead Singers'. His work can be viewed at the Art Gallery, Library, Peacock, Hospital Art Gallery, and Maritime Museum.
