Consultations for second University Gaelic Plan

Consultations for second University Gaelic Plan

The University of Aberdeen is to hold a consultation period to inform its second Gaelic Language Plan.

The University’s first plan, developed in 2013, outlines a series of commitments the University made as part of its efforts to promote the use and acquisition of the Gaelic language.

Under the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act of 2005, public bodies were required to produce a Gaelic Language Plan to assist the national effort to secure the status of Gaelic as an official language of Scotland.

Along with the universities, of Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Highlands & Islands, the University of Aberdeen was one of four higher education institutions required to produce a Gaelic Language Plan.

The University’s second Gaelic Language Plan is being developed by an Advisory Group chaired by Vice-Principal Professor Marion Campbell.

Professor Campbell said: “The University of Aberdeen is committed to the aspirations and objectives included as part of the National Plan for Gaelic. We recognise that we have a considerable role to play, both through academic leadership and civic influence, in supporting those objectives.”

The Gaelic Language Plan highlights how the University of Aberdeen will assist the national effort to increase the use, acquisition and status of Gaelic and contribute to the language’s development. The University has already taken steps to incorporate Gaelic into aspects of its corporate identity and services –

Some examples to date include the new King Street entrance to the King’s College campus, and the wider use of a Gaelic version of the University logo.

Staff, students and members of the public are invited to comment on the Plan at a number of consultation meetings:

  • Public open meeting: April 19, 2018, 6pm-7pm, Linklater Rooms
  • Staff and Students: April 25, 2018, 10.30am – 11.30am, Seminar Room 224, Sir Duncan Rice Library

Co-chomhairleachadh air dàrna Plana Gàidhlig an Oilthigh

Tha Oilthigh Obar Dheathain gu bhith a’ cumail co-chomhairleachadh agus iad a’ sireadh bheachdan gus cuideachadh le bhith a’ dealbh an dàrna Plana Gàidhlig aca.

Ann an ciad phlana an Oilthigh, a chaidh fhoillseachadh ann an 2013, bha sreath de gheallaidhean a rinn an t-Oilthigh mar phàirt den obair a bhios iad a’ dèanamh gus cleachdadh is ionnsachadh na Gàidhlig a chur air adhart.

Fo Achd na Gàidhlig (Alba) 2005, bha aig cuid a bhuidhnean poblach ri Planaichean Gàidhlig ullachadh mar thaic don iomairt nàiseanta gus inbhe na Gàidhlig a dhèanamh tèarainte mar chànan oifigeil ann an Alba.

Còmhla ri Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann, Oilthigh Ghlaschu, agus Oilthigh na Gàidhealtachd is nan Eilean, bha Oilthigh Obar Dheathain am measg nan ceithir ionadan-foghlaim àrd-ìre air an deach iarraidh Plana Gàidhlig ullachadh.

Tha Buidheann Comhairleachaidh, air a bheil an Leas-Phrionnsapal an t-Ollamh Mòr Chaimbeul na Cathraiche, air an dreachd de dhàrna Plana Gàidhlig an Oilthigh a dhealbh.

Thuirt an t-Àrd Ollamh Chaimbeul: “Tha Oilthigh Obar Dheathain a’ cur a làn-thaic ris na h-amasan is cinn-uidhe a chithear sa Phlana Cànain Nàiseanta Ghàidhlig. Tha sinn a’ gabhail ris gu bheil àite cudromach againn ann a bhith a’ toirt taic do na cinn-uidhe sin, an dà chuid tro ar n-eòlas is comhairle acadaimigeach agus tron dàimh is ceangal a th’ againn ris a’ mhòr-shluagh.”

Tha am Plana Gàidhlig a’ sealltainn mar a tha Oilthigh Obar Dheathain a’ dol a chuideachadh leis an iomairt nàiseanta gus cur ri cleachdadh, ionnsachadh agus inbhe na Gàidhlig agus gus cor a’ chànain a thoirt air adhart. Tha an t-Oilthigh air ceumannan a ghabhail mu thràth gus Gàidhlig fhighe a-steach do dh’ìomhaigh chorporra is seirbheisean an Oilthigh.

Am measg nan rudan a rinneadh mu thràth tha: gun deach Gàidhlig a dhèanamh mar phàirt den t-slighe a-steach ùir air Sràid an Rìgh a tha a’ dol a-steach gu Colaiste an Rìgh, agus gu bheilear a’ cleachdadh na dreachd Ghàidhlig de shuaicheantas an Oilthigh nas trice.

Thathar a’ toirt cothrom do luchd-obrach, oileanaich agus don mhòr-shluagh beachdan a thoirt seachad air a’ Phlana aig diofar choinneamhan co-comhairleachaidh:

  • Coinneamh phoblach: 19 Giblean 2018, 6-7f, Seòmraichean Linklater, Colaiste an Rìgh
  • Luchd-obrach is Oileanaich: 25 Giblean 2018, 10.30m – 11.30m, Seòmar Seimineir 224, Leabharlann Sir Duncan Rice

Faodaidh beachdan a bhith air an toirt seachad (ann am Beurla no Gàidhlig) cuideachd ann a bhith a’ cleachdadh na suirbhidhe a leanas: https://viis.abdn.ac.uk/snapwebhost/s.asp?k=152119973318
