Aberdeen climate change expert elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy

Leading climate change scientist, Professor Pete Smith, has been elected as a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, one of only four such Fellowships for 2018 announced this week.

Professor Smith is a world leading expert on greenhouse gas emissions from managed land and through experimentation and modelling, his work has redefined the likely response of soils to climate change, and provided the first quantitative global estimate of how agriculture and land use can contribute to mitigation.

Professor Smith has a long history of collaboration with Indian Institutions and has hosted internships and visiting fellowships for a number of Indian students and academic staff.

His appointment to the academy will allow him to build upon the already strong links between his team and Indian researchers, and will further collaborative output in leading international journals.

Professor Smith commented: “It is extremely humbling and exciting to be elected as Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy. This recognition is a great honour, and will  hopefully provide further opportunities for me to work with leading Indian scientists, to allow us to achieving joint research goals. I look forward to forming new collaborations with colleagues at the Indian Academy.”
